Jack Trout Fly McCloud

Fishing has been good afternoons on the Upper Sections of the Lower McCloud River, if you can find a spot to fish with all the anglers present. Try to NOT come during the weekends and target mid week for less crowds. Use small nymphs for small hatches and look for trout rising to may flies mid day from Ash Camp up or down. Fishing is good, but not like it was last week. Make plans to get up here before the end of July where flows will be a mirage if you wait too long.

thumbs up Jack Trout

McCloud River Jack Trout Fly FishingMcCloud River Nature Conservancy -

Fishing has been slower on the McCloud River due to too much pressure from anglers, when I drove through Ah Di Nah on Saturday every camp space was taken as well as many free sites full. McCloud Conservancy was also full. We fished above Nature Conservancy and caught some small trout and moved up river for better fishing after 2 pm. The river is slow in the mornings until 11 am and then fishes best from 2 pm to dark. Nymphs are best, size 18 has been the best size to use. Poxy back golden stones size 18 seems  to be the best fly right now in addition to size 18 micro may flies size 18 in black. Dry fly is good from 2 pm to dark in the upper sections of the McCloud river, use a EC caddis size 16 or adams on top. Lots of stones but fish don’t seem to be on them. We could use a rain storm folks Team Trout. The area warden Joe Powell retired, so right now we are the wardens on the rivers around Shasta. Call – DFG – Cal Tip

Pit River – # 3 Section – # 4 & # 5

Jack Trout Pit River

Pit River Same as last week, off the charts trout fishing in the north state as Pit 3 is fishing the best and least difficult to wade sections 3, 4 or 5. High stick with black copper johns size 12 and pt’s size 14 on the bottom. Also right near dark or on cloudy days the caddis hatch turns on. Use elk hair or ec caddis size 14. Wade with caution. Conditions are improving every day and fishing is really turning on. Bring a wading staff!! Pit #3, 4 or 5 black nymphs and rubber legs, and elk hair caddis. Head to Hat Creek at 7 pm… :)  jt  thumbs up Jack Trout

**********************************************************************

jack trout fly fishing hat creek Hat Creek – Good may fly in the early mornings from 9 am to 11 am , look for morning spinner fall and use a size 16 BWO, hatches occurring daily especially again int he afternoons. For nymphs use amber princes, birds nest size 14, green drake nymphs, s&m’s size 18, BK micro mayfly size 18, Dries, lt cahill, crippled may fly size 16, EC caddis size 16. Hat Creek should get better every week now as we head into June prime time peaks about June 25th. Lots and lots of salmon flies & golden stones seen this week. Some fish caught on cripples size 16. Fish the last hours of light for magic, look for caddis & may fly hatches near dark. go to the Pit in the middle of the day, you’ll thank me. jt

**************************************************************

upper sac float trip jack troutUpper Sacramento River – The Upper Sacramento River is good but not until after the morning brisk is gone and the light hits the water creating a hatch. Flows are very good for wading. I have seen golden stones daily in the afternoons on warmer days. size 16, Blue wing olives and grey may flies on colder days. Use beaded nymphs size 18 to 14. Size 18 black micro mayfly was best for me this week. Also size 18 red & black copper johns. s&m’s size 18, pt’s flash back size 18. Heat will slow fishing down plan to stay until dark for best results. Fishing around Dunsmuir has been good. Best section is from Sims to Shasta Lake.  DFG 530-225-2146 stockings – jt

The Upper Sac Is fishing good, with low flows at 250cfs its easy to access the whole river by walk and wade. Nymphing with a adjustable indicator, throwing stone patterns, small mays, and good old birds nest will be the ticket. When the wind is not blowing to hard, drys should work most of the evening. Start with a Stimulator, and small BH dropper, than as the activity progresses on the top take the dropper off. Upper Sac is a nice place to be wading in the refreshing snow melt when its hot out side. Forrest B - thumbs up Jack Trout

Klamath Jack Trout  Klamath River – Salmon flies hatching now, some adult steelhead and small fish are on them this week. Use a Rogue Foam Stone on top or try bigger nymphs like size 10 princes & size kauffman stones. Also try poxy back hairs ears size 12 and black copper johns size 14. fox poopah size 14 as well as size 12 soft hackles on the Klamath River. Use big size 10 princes or Eng Thing. Also dark lord is working. Klamath salmon fly fishing hatch can be very fun dry fly action can be rewarding in June & July. If fish are taking on the surface or fish are small change and nymph. 50/50 on this river right now with all the heat, some days will produce better than others.  thumbs up Jack Trout

Lower Sac is sitting around 13,750 cfs and still fishing well. Throwing PMDs, Yellow stones, Caddis Puppas, and Baetis Patterns will be your best bet. Run a deep leader with up to 3 grams of weight to get down to the fish in the fast water, Lower Sac fish are very weary of predators so fish the deep edges, and seams. Best bite is mid morning and late afternoon for nymphing. Hanging around 45 min before dark will pay off skating a caddis across the top, be ready for the dry bite it only lasts a short time.

Hex Hatch Fall River Matt Mitchell  Fall River – Private Access 2013 -

The Fall River continues to fish really good! Most days start with a trico spinner fall at and above the spring Creek bridge. In the upper reaches above fish camp there has been a great PMD spinner fall in the morning as well.
At around eleven, a PMD hatch begins and the fish start really feeding aggressively! Unfortunately the fish are only sparsely eating off the top during the hatch. However they eat nymphs with reckless abandon! It is not uncommon to hook ten to twenty fish on nymphs during the one to three hour hatch! Depending on angler skill of course!
After the hatch the bite slows and we have been switching to clear intermediate line and small leaches and soft hackles.
Oh the holy hex! It’s that time of the year again, one of my favorites for sure! The largest of the mayflies, the Hexogenia hatch goes for close to an hour in the late evening,

Usually this time of year, we hit the water at 8am and take off for a break at a out 2pm.
Then it’s back on at 6:30pm and I get you back to the dock at 10:30 at night!
I think the boat ride back in the dark is one of the best parts!
Thanks for your time,  -Matt Mitchell

thumbs up Jack Trout

jack trout mccloud

Fishing has been good in the mornings and late in the day in this hot weather. Lots of golden stones in the afternoons, use a size 10 or 12 stimulator with dropppers before 3 pm, then without after then. If you use a dropper go long and consider two nymphs, one doubles as your weight. Try to get to the other side of the McCloud River and always try to fish or wade from from flat side of the river to bank side of the river. Small dropper rigs for your nymphs like size 16 & 18. Right before dark dry fly with light cahills size 16 or parachute adams. look for foam lines and trout rising. If you’re not picking up fish, go to nymphing with two size 18 nymphs one caddis on top, one mayfly on the bottom and very colors – possible no beads. Look for pocket water or hydrated water edges and go extreme measures.. Turn in poachers to DFG !!! I see many violators on the McCloud below dam.

The hot weather moves into the region, consider fishing until dark on the  McCloud River and try to target weekdays, especially from Ah Di Nah to Nature Conservancy. Mornings are slow, target 11 am to 7 PM.. WORD!

Nymph with copper johns on top size 14 in red black or copper, then use a small s&m or micro mayfly in size 18. Poxy back nymphs on top then very small size 18 nymph on the bottom of the the rig. One SSG weight, do a lot of high sticking. Look for foam line or dry fly water after 5 pm try on top near elephant ear edges and near the banks. Try cahills size 16, may fly cripples, adams size 16, pink cahills size 14, sulphur comparaduns 14. Golden Stones are now showing daily for next 10 to 14 days, use stimulator size 12. Team Trout

The Caddis bite has started on the Lower Sac, and still PMDS and PEDS as well. Throwing # 14 Cinnamon Caddis puppas or Birds Nest is the best bet (Pettis Caddis). Flows increased to 14,000, high water has made fishing slow down a little but nice trout can still be caught. The Lower Sac will continue to produce fish but high temps will make fishing later better.

fall river jack trout  Fall River – Private Access 2013 -

The Fall has been great, having twenty hookups per rod per day! The hex have started and are really popping! Fish are eating nymphs, pt’s and s&m’s have been the go to bugs in the morning, with red cooper Jon’s and the ju ju baetis working well in the afternoons. We have also been doing well stripping damsels with a clear intermediate line in the afternoon!

The Fall continues to fish good as the weeds are a lot further a long than last year! With better weeds come better hatches and higher water levels!
There has been good hatches of baetis an pmd’s most days, with the hatch lasting anywhere from 30 minutes, up to an hour and a half.
The fish are also a lot more spread out this year and seem to be everywhere they should be! Which gives lots of options on the river and helps spread out the anglers a bit.
Pit river continues to fish well with nymphs under indicators, with red copper jons, poxyback hares ears, rubber legs and birds nests producing consistent fishing throughout the day.
I have been switching to dries in the late afternoon, with elk hair caddis, and outrigger caddis producing consistent fishing. They are also eating rogue foam, and designated hitter stonefly patterns as well. The stones have produced some epic smashing grabs this week for sure!
I was lucky enough to get to spend a half day on the powerhouse two riffle on hat creek this week too! There was a few Salmon fly buzzing around so I put on a rubber leg with a birds nest dropper. We caught multiple fish on both flies, with the biggest being 19″ and fat!
We switched to dries and caught a few on caddis patterns here as well!
I spent yesterday fishing the Lower Sac in downtown redding, and it fished great! The fish have dropped off the spawning beds and into the runs and are fattening up nicely! They were eating caddis and mayfly patterns dredged deep under an indicator.
Thanks, -Matt Mitchell

thumbs up Jack Trout

I wrote the section on Fly Fishing Chile and Argentina in Fodor's Travel Books.

"Since 1995 I've been outfitting and guiding in Patagonia Chile and Argentina, I am proud to share with you some of my finest hours on the waters of the Patagonia as illustrated in this Fodor's book. I hope you enjoy reading then experiencing fly fishing's final frontier in two countries completely unique to one another, yet attached at the hip by the world's largest natural border. Letters to Jack Trout:

"You took us to some great holes, isolated, productive and as picturesque as a movie set. Thanks to your helpful tips on tackle set up and technique, I caught more fish in the first hour than I had on my entire previous trip elsewhere. These rainbows displayed the same energy and enthusiasm for the venture as you did." - Richard Posilippo Portola Valley, CA "Thanks again for a great trip.
