073Upper Sacramento River – Been floating Upper Sacramento River in my raft, fishing has been terrific as flows are perfect at 500 CFS. Good nymphing all day with copper johns on top any color and s&m or bk micro may fly on the bottom. Not much dry fly action right now but maybe more with cloud cover and incoming rain storm. Think about an adams size 14 in the afternoon on the surface bite. River has come down so fast, but trout are hungry and easy to access. Best sections from Sims to Dog Creek.

jack trout fly fishing fall riverFall River – Private Access 2013 – River is in great shape, there is more water than last year and there are several weed beds already established in the river. Which is good for the hatches!
We have been fishing leaches and soft hackles in the morning, but there has been a baetis hatch daily bringing fish to the surface starting around eleven.
If you head to the upper regions of the Fall River above the confluence of Spring Creek, there has been a decent spinner fall in the morning with a decent PMD hatch in the afternoon. Overall this opener has been a good one with lots of fish being hooked every day with nymphs, dries, and sinking lines too! Cooler days look for green drake hatches
With the warmer weather earlier this year, we could see an earlier start on the Hexogenia hatch, as early as June first if we are lucky! Which puts trips with the Salmon fly and the hex in a two day trip within reach! Team Trout purchased launch rights on the Upper Fall so we have access now to a private launch to take clients right on the best fishing Fall River has to offer!
***********************************************************
Trinity River – Pumped up to 2500+++ as of May 16th – NO GO NOW!!!

June 1st flows go to 1500 CFS then down to 450 CFS by 3rd week of June for springers.

The McCloud River, continues to be great as the flows are perfect for safe wading and fly fishing. Size 16 amber princes as well as size 16 pheasant tails, poxy back golden stones size 14 & 16.  16 Lt cahill’s, adams size 16 & 18, sulphur comparaduns, look for rising trout after 2 pm. Flows are perfect now and river is the best condition for a spring opener in years on the Pit River  Pit 3#4 Flows & #5 Flows below Lake Britton Dam down to Power House 5 and Big Bend. Water now running clear and fishing well. Use princes size 14, rubber legs size 12 with a smaller beaded nymph like a Hairs Ear size 14. Cycle through nymphs that are size 14 & 12’s use heavier nymphs on top and smaller nymph below off setting colors has been effective. Bring a wading staff always on the Pit River and use some shin protectors, also consider a PFD wading vest for floatation, this river can be  difficult to wade in places  where it is hard to see the ground, feel your way around leaning on your staff. Also consider bringing a sink tip 300 grains and using some heavy crystal bugger patterns size 6 as well as in green or back buggers size 8.
double nymph rigs with lots of weight like use one or two size SSG Dinsmore weights above your two nymphs. Rely on high sticking and stay attached to your flies for best results. Team Trout Guides

Hat Creek Flows moderate, ok for wading
Power House 2 on Hat Creek down to Weir before Lake Britton Dam all running at good levels, clear and fishing good nymphing with dry-droppers or nymphing with soft hackles size 16 – Look for Blue Wing Olive hatches mid day but in the mornings nymph with very small flies size 18 and 20’s like black micro may flies, flashback Pt’s, fox poopah caddis and size 16 poxy back golden stones. Mid day look for sulphur dun hatches and use size 16 pink cahills no parachute and adams cripples size 16, blue wing olive dry flies size 18 & 16. possible size 16 stimulator with droppers off the dry fly. Baetis hatches before noon daily, spinner fall and PMD hatch most afternoons.

xspacerlibrarywebserverdocumentsstaticpicturesjacktrout138800x600Upper Sacramento River – Flows as of Tuesday 05/06 are at 600 CFS holding steady for the past week. (220 to 342 CFS friendly wading level)
This is high but is coming down quickly with snow pack being only 50% of normal on Mount Shasta. The Upper Sac is running clear and has been fishing fantastic for this time of year especially on sunny days with no wind. Fishing from Dunsmuir down to Sims is better than usual, nymphing with poxy back hairs ears size 14 and a flash back pheasant tails on the dropper (no bead) , add two SSG weights and you be picking up trout often. Not very much pressure on the river makes it a great choice this week. Also these flies will work, black copper johns size 16, amber princes size 14, rubber legs size 12 with red copper john as dropper or small poxy back golden stone size 16. Rely on high sticking and stay attached to your flies for best results. Call on Team Trout for any guiding as we are in full swing now. Some dry fly mid day as day warms up, try a adams parachute or a small size 16 elk hair caddis.

The Lower Sac continues to produce numbers with 20 plus inch hogs, as well as a few steelhead being caught this week. Flows remain at 11k with no schedule changes at this time. The hatch is on as well with PMD’s, Little Yellow Stone’s, flying around, and the caddis are starting as well. The dry bite is just beginning so a later start in the day ending later to catch the bite is a option as well. Throw deep leaders and heavy shot at these flows when nymphing. jack trout fly fishing     A Fine Brown Trout Caught on the Rio Yelcho in Patagonia Chile

I wrote the section on Fly Fishing Chile and Argentina in Fodor's Travel Books.

"Since 1995 I've been outfitting and guiding in Patagonia Chile and Argentina, I am proud to share with you some of my finest hours on the waters of the Patagonia as illustrated in this Fodor's book. I hope you enjoy reading then experiencing fly fishing's final frontier in two countries completely unique to one another, yet attached at the hip by the world's largest natural border. I listed all the best rivers, lodges and guides in Argentina and Chile, as well as information on choosing an area, the right times to travel to each region and many other helpful tips and secrets I've learned over the years. If you're going to Chile or Argentina for any reason. I highly suggest having this book in your pack."

Many Rivers to You, Jack Trout

Letters to Jack Trout:

"You took us to some great holes, isolated, productive and as picturesque as a movie set. Thanks to your helpful tips on tackle set up and technique, I caught more fish in the first hour than I had on my entire previous trip elsewhere. These rainbows displayed the same energy and enthusiasm for the venture as you did." - Richard Posilippo Portola Valley, CA "Thanks again for a great trip. You are an excellent guide and I will remember my first really successful fly fishing expedition for many years to come." - Jeff Woodard Eureka, CA "Thanks a lot for leading me to great fishing. Your guide was excellent! The McCloud River is one of the most beautiful rivers I've ever seen." -Robin Yount, Baseball Hall of Fame "The finest rafting fly fishing trip for trout in California is with Jack Trout on the Upper Sacramento River. On my 3rd cast I caught a trout that was 17 inches, and by the end of the day I caught and released too many to remember? I put it on my calendar every year!
