We Are The Smith River Fly Fishing Experts, Call Us For Updates & Reports
The Smith River In Northern California is located 12 miles northeast of Crescent City in Del Norte County. The Smith River is 25.1 miles long as it flows freely to the ocean from the Siskiyou Mountains in Oregon into far Northern California, it then becomes the second longest undammed river in California.
Located in the wettest region in California, the steelhead and salmon know this, waiting each year for the optimal time to replenish future generations of family, we like to track their every move as we concentrate throughout the season so we know where to guide our clientele on this river and others in the region that are heavily influenced by winter storms.
The Smith River is a spectacular turquoise glacial colored river that clears up as fast as a storm blows it out, lined with ancient redwoods, fir trees and ferns, many have claimed this is THE most beautiful river in California.
The steelhead & salmon that frequent this river can be enormous, we always carry the right gear for you to land these beasts. Knowing when to be on this river is our specialty, give us a call to go over gear, regulations and our advice on open dates. Most of the years we are going for salmon November through December, while January through April we target steelhead. (Note The Smith may not be open on some years if flows above Rowdy Creek are not above 700 CFS.)
Cost: $495 One or Two Anglers Per Day Includes Lunch, Gear and Flies.

TRADITIONAL SWING FLIES USING SPEY RODS
We had a great time fishing on the Smith River with guide Kenton. We hooked into some monster salmon and really enjoyed floating down the wild, scenic, and incredibly beautiful Smith River. Kenton was a great guide and taught us a lot about fishing the river. He even spent time to teach us how to spey cast. Great way to spend a day for honeymooners who love to fish together!

JACK TROUT CATCHES 35 LB SALMON ON THE SMITH RIVER ON HIS FLY ROD
Putah Creek - is a major stream in Northern California, a tributary of the Yolo Bypass. The 85-mile-long (137 km) creek starts its headwaters in the Mayacamas Mountains, a part of the Northern California coastal range and the most important creek/river located just outside of the SF Bay Area. The name is Putah is a Miwok Indian word meaning “grassy banks.” Though in our estimation, they should of named this river “Pocket Water Creek” as this is one of the best creek/rivers in the state to practice your pocket water high stick nymphing skills. This river is well known for large trout and tough wading as this river is not for everyone, but can be rewarding for a good days effort.
We like to guide this river for clients who are traveling from the San Francisco Bay Area or Sacramento areas as this is one of the areas closest rivers to each metropolitan areas. Let us show the secrets of Putah Creek and how to fish this amazing creek that holds enormous trout. This river is closest place for good fly fishing if you live in San Jose, Oakland, Concord, San Francisco, Napa, Santa Rosa, Palo Alto & Marin. We look forward to guiding you and remember, all gear is included with a terrific streamside lunch. Our guides are experts on this piece of water, we can make your experience a memorable one.

GUIDE ART TETER FALL RIVER GUIDE EXPERT OVER 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE AREA RESIDENT.
April, May & June can be amazing with plenty of may fly hatches occurring daily. These may flies are called Pale Morning Duns or PMD’s. When they hatch they mate in the air, then they die and become what we call spinners because of their wings spinning in the breeze on the surface of Fall River. The spinner fall hatch is popular to fish among anglers in the spring and it’s not uncommon to see multiple trout rising to these flies when the hatch occurs depending on the day, temps and cycle. Your guide can go over the best times and options as this is one river you need to devise a plan for fly fishing, depending on when you are going to fish it. We can help answer any questions and be sure you are fishing in the right area at right times and help you with lodging suggestions, restaurants in the area and make your experience in the Fall River Valley a successful one.
Mid June Through July the famous Hex Hatch occurs, the largest of all may flies, a mid summer staple for the local trout and their huge appetite for may flies that are the porter house steaks of insects right before dark. We fish this hatch on our private ranch access in the areas where the largest hatches occur annually. You can not believe when these huge Fall River Trout get going on Hexes and the sounds of trout as large as 10 lbs come crashing down in the twilight zone of the imagination, some that have fly fished for decades claims, their reconciles are none the better.
Mid summer fishing begins to depend on average temps, early and late are times to consider as the Trico & Baetis hatches come and go at various times of the day and using small tippet sizes is the key to success. In the mid day when fishing can be slow, we like to concentrate on nymphing and swinging flies with sink tips and slime lines. As fall begins after Late September, the hatches begin to happen occur more frequently and for longer periods and many Calibaetis can be seen in large numbers. Being at the right place at the right time is important.
Upper Fall River – The Upper Fall River flows out of springs that percolate from the springs that arise out of the town of Dana. These springs are very cold and encourage prolific hatches daily. The river is much smaller in the upper reaches and the very top 1/3 is tree lined. It is shallower than the lower sections of the river with more riffles and pools of water to fish, making the river easier to read and more predictable.
GUIDE DALE LANGSTAFF FALL RIVER FLY FISHING GUIDE EXPERT & LOCAL RESIDENT
Lower Fall River – When the Fall River passes Tule Creek, it grows at least double in size, this area is considered the lower river. The Hex Hatch occurs in this area prolifically in May, June & July annually, it is the largest hatch of all may fly hatches. We are proud to announce our private access by a rancher friend to this section of river. We provide early and late entry to maximize your angling success. We like to meet at 7 am fish till noon then take a mid day break and come back around 5 pm. Some of our clients like to rest mid day or go fishing on Hat Creek or Pit River in between hours we fish on Fall River, while others enjoy a nice nap on a grassy bank or back at the room.

Hat Creek Fly Fishing Guides - Burney, Cassel, Redding Area
Is one of California’s well renowned spring creeks that provides productive and predictable dry fly fishing for rainbows and the occasional brown trout. It’s waters stretch from Power House #2 on down to Baum Lake and the lower waters near the weir before joining the Pit River at Lake Britton.
We have guided this river since 1994 and have extensive knowledge in regards to hatches and approach when stalking stealthy trout that can be very selective depending on what they are dining on that particular day. We always look forward to the daily spinner hatches of mayflies and the afternoon caddis, as well as the annual Salmon Fly, Hexagenia, Drake & October Caddis hatches that trout go crazy for! Let us be your guide on a fabulous day together on Hat Creek, we like to dry fly fish, nymph and streamer fish all sections of this creek with tremendous success. We’ll provide all the flies for this adventure, you only need to show up with your fishing license in hand, hat & sun glasses, we can even provide all the gear for the day.
WE SUPPLY SIMMS G4 WADERS & BOOTS, RODS, REELS FOR ALL OF OUR TRIPS PLUS WADING STAFFS & A STREAM SIDE GOURMET LUNCH .
The Hat Creek is located about 30 to 40 minutes from the town of Burney. One Hour from Mount Shasta & Redding and 5 hours from the San Francisco Bay Area of California.
Use a 3, 4 or 5 weight rods with floating lines. Some also use intermediate sinking lines with leeches and small streamers. Hat Creek is has one of the richest and most abundant selections of insects of any river or spring creek in California, this is what makes the trout and the fishery so healthy. Knowing what to use when and where to go is why having us guide you there is part of the keys to success.
